Workshop on Promoting R&D Performance and Climate Change Initiatives for Sustainable Development of Viet Nam and Korea

Hanoi, 8th April 2019, Green Technology Center Korea (GTCK) organized the Workshop on Promoting R&D Performance and Climate Change Initiatives for Sustainable Development of Viet Nam and Korea.

To participate with the Workshop including Dr In-hwan Oh, President of GTCK; Dr. Kum Dongwha, President of Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), and many Specialists from GTCK, Institutes, Universities and Representative of Ministry of Science and Technology.

In order to realize the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, including the implementation of the Paris Agreement in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the workshop aims to: Supporting the development of project strategies, and possible areas of science and technology cooperation between Korea and Viet Nam; Exploring opportunities of Korea-Viet Nam joint research projects and strategic plan for commercialization, and Developing a business model on climate technology project.

At the workshop, Dr. Kum Dongwha delivered a speech about the Cooperation in Science and Technology between Vietnam and Korea, the speech to emphasize the role of Science and Technology in serving Sustainable Development, especially in climate change, while Vietnam is one of countries that was the most affected.

Cooperation in the development of climate-related technologies and green industries, which Korea has vast potential in, will bring mutual benefits in tackling climate change which has become an tremendous challenge for coastal countries including the Social Republic of Viet Nam. Both countries will strengthen their partnership in the area of common interests such as (i) energy efficiency drive in major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, (ii) formulation of effective adaptation strategies, for instance, on IoT based water management and application of smart farm technology in identified area in Mekong delta, a leading agricultural region in this country, and (iii) sharing Korea’s experiences and practice in promoting green economy and developing low carbon technology.

Successfully, the workshop was intended to achieve the following outcomes:

- Sharing of cooperation agendas through on-going projects and strategies;

- Developing possible opportunities for cooperation based on the dimensions of ongoing projects and building institutional network.
