VKIST’s preliminary meeting of the first half year and tasks implementation plan of the last 6 months in 2021

On July 6th, 2021, Vietnam - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) held a preliminary meeting to review the work results of the first half year and set tasks implementation plan for the last 6 months in 2021.

Attending the meeting there were Ms. To Mai Trinh, Deputy Head of the Asia - Africa - America Division of International Cooperation Department (ICD), VKIST leaders and other VKIST staff.

Overview of the meeting

The first six months of 2021 saw the great influence of the Covid-19 epidemic. However, thanks to the close direction and support of MOST leaders and MOST’s relevant Departments as well as great effort and solidarity of VKIST’s leaders and staff, almost all VKIST’s tasks have been completed on schedule by the end of June 2021. Up to now, VKIST has performed a total of 17 science and technology projects, including 01 grassroots level project, 08 ministerial-level projects, 01 protocol project, 05 KIST sub-projects, and 02 KIST-VKIST joint research projects (pilot projects).

Regarding biotechnology field, Assoc. Pro. Dr. Phuong Thien Thuong, Head of Biotechnology Division, reported on the Division’s research results (including 03 ministerial-level projects, 01 grassroots-level project, and 01 KIST sub-project). Currently, the Biotechnology Division is surveying some medicinal plants in Cao Bang Province, which are potential to develop health-care products.

For the KIST sub-project, a research team of Biotechnology Division is identifying carotenoids in different ripening stages of Vietnamese Gac fruit and developing extraction, preservation and storage methods for the medicinal product.

In addition, the Biotechnology Division is performing some ministerial-level projects including: “Identification of anti-inflammatory active constituents in Vietnamese hythiem (Seigesbeckia orientalis L.) for improvement of manufacturing extraction process and  quality standards of products containing hythiem”; “Development of a technical process with upgraded productivity for extraction and purification of curcuminoids from turmeric (Curcuma longa) and identification of the origin of natural curcuminoids”; “Development of a product for the prevention of diarrhea syndrome in pig from the animal feed Premixhad.”

For convergence technology field, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Ngoc Lien, Head of Information Technology (IT) - Biotechnology (BT) Convergence Technology Division, updated research results on Lateral Flow Immune Assay strip for on-site detection of avian influenza virus and breast cancer.

In the field of electronics, VKIST is developing core technologies including permanent magnet synchronous motors for electric vehicles and control and charging systems for electric cars. According to Mr. Pham Duy Hoc, Head of Electronics Division, his researchers are currently implementing the project “Develop a calculation, simulation tool for designing permanent magnet synchronous motors”.

Regarding information technology field, Dr. Nguyen The Hoang Anh reported results of KIST-VKIST joint research project “Intelligent embedded camera system (Poliface system). At the meeting, Mr. Hoang Anh’s team also performed a practical test of the Poliface system.

At the meeting, Heads of Research Divisions reported difficulties and advantages in implementing research projects and offered solutions to accelerate progress to ensure the successful tasks completion in the first half of 2021.

VKIST’s administrative management, human resources, communication & external affairs, building construction and management of facilities are strictly implemented and in accordance with regulations, although these activities were partly affected by Covid-19. Regarding human resources, in the first 6 months of 2021, VKIST has actively implemented recruitment batches as well as reviewed, adjusted and supplemented Divisions leadership planning for the period 2021 - 2026 in order to promptly add competent, qualified and qualified officials to the leadership positions of Divisions, step by step consolidate the entire organizational apparatus. Regarding the appointment of leadership positions, VKIST has completed the appointment process and decided to appoint Head of Planning and Coordination Division. VKIST President has just approved the planning for the Vice President Position.

Dr. Hoang Hien Hau, Head of the Administration Division, also mentioned VKIST’s shortcomings during the previous 6 months. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of communication, external affairs and construction activities had to be delayed.

After listening to the reports, Ms. To Mai Trinh of ICD congratulated VKIST for achievements in implementing research projects. According to Ms. Trinh, VKIST can apply for not only ministerial-level and protocol-level research projects, which are currently presided over approval by ICD, but also other kinds of programs/projects such as Program 4.0, Program 592, Independent Program... VKIST should consider submitting more proposals for these above-mentioned programs. Ms. Trinh said that this meeting was an opportunity for ICD to better understand the difficulties that VKIST is facing with. With prompt support of ICD, hopefully VKIST can soon overcome difficulties to put research results into practice.

Concluding the meeting, President Kum Dongwha highly appreciated the results achieved in the first half year thanks to great efforts of all VKIST staff during this challenging period. He hoped that VKIST would continue to make contributions and dedication, overcome all difficulties, actively coordinate with relevant agencies to implement and successfully complete the key tasks of 2021.

On behalf of VKIST, President Kum sincerely thanked ICD for always accompanying and supporting VKIST in implementing the assigned tasks. In the coming time, VKIST hopes to continue to receive the attention and support of ICD as well as related agencies under MOST so that VKIST can successfully complete its tasks.
