VKIST-KIST R&D Cooperation Seminar

As part of a series of events to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18) and the 5-year anniversary of establishment, VKIST cooperated with Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to organize a VKIST-KIST R&D Cooperation Seminar at VKIST headquarters.

In the framework of event series celebrating Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18) and the 5-year anniversary, VKIST collaborated with KIST to organize the very first R&D Cooperation Seminar between two Institutes at VKIST Headquarters. Its objective is to evaluate the results of joint research projects and discuss potential cooperative directions in the future. The seminar is expected to leverage the strategic relationship between VKIST and KIST, especially in applied research contributing to the development of socio-economic in Vietnam.

In VKIST side, there were Mr. Phuong Thien Thuong – Vice President cum Head of Biotechnology Division, Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Lien – Head of Convergence Technology Division, Mr. Pham Duy Hoc – Head of Mechatronics Division, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan – Head of Planning & Coordination Division together with all researchers of VKIST attending the seminar.

In KIST side, there were Mr. Kim Ig Jae from Artificial Intelligence and Robot Institute, Mr. Lee Jae Wook from Natural Product Research Center, Mr. Kim Soon Kyum from Center for Healthcare Robotics, Mr. Cho Jung Hyun and Mr. Choi Hee Seung from Center for Artificial Intelligence, Mr. Sa Seung Hoon and Mr. Kim Hae Song from International Cooperation Team as well as other P.Is and researchers of KIST attending the seminar offline and online.

Besides, there were several S&T organizations and enterprises attending the seminar.

Overview of the seminar

The seminar is an opportunity for scientists of both sides to discuss the results achieved in joint research projects and determine research plans based on latest trends, contributing to promoting the partnership between VKIST and KIST in applied research pertaining to the development of socio-economic of Vietnam. Besides, the seminar is held for experts of both sides to exchange experiences and find out solutions to leveraging joint research activities between the two Institutes.

Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Lien – Head of Convergence Technology Division reported research results of her Division from 2017 till present. For the field of Convergence Technology, VKIST is currently focusing on developing two product lines of Magnetic Lateral Flow Immunoassays strips (MagLFIA) that detect breast cancer markers and avian influenza viruses.

Mr. Pham Duy Hoc – Head of Mechatronics Division presented the core technologies his Division is currently focusing on including Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) for electric vehicles as well as the control system and charging system for electric cars. In his presentation, Mr. Hoc emphasized that his research group is carrying out those projects on developing tools for calculating and simulating the design of PMSM.

Mr. Phuong Thien Thuong – Vice President cum Head of Biotechnology Division presented results of the research project on developing extraction procedure for Gac. In terms of the KIST-sub project, the research group is focusing on identifying the carotenoids in the different ripening stages of Gac collected in several provinces within Vietnam, and developing methods for extraction, preservation and storage of the product. Regarding the development of new products, VKIST is collaborating with KIST to conduct a research project on developing those products preventing cold, flu and COVID-19 based on Vietnamese traditional remedies. It is expected that the product will be commercialized within the next 3 years.

In the field of Information Technology, VKIST is now studying about facial recognition technology imbedded in the ‘Poliface’ that was cooperated with KIST. The research group is now putting the camera system under test run.

Through the online connection, KIST researchers presented about joint research results and implementation plan for further joint R&D activities between VKIST and KIST in the upcoming time.

To conclude the seminar, Mr. Phuong Thien Thuong expressed his sincere appreciation to the Korean side for their support during the implementation of joint research projects as well as the development journey of VKIST. Hopefully, both sides will continue jointly implementing research activities in the future. More important, there will be more R&D cooperation seminars held between VKIST and KIST so that both sides can exchange knowledge and experience, contributing the capacity building of researchers and promoting the partnership between both sides.
