Survey on the situation of landslide and saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta region

VKIST established a mission to meet with the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research (SIWRR) and conduct field surveys at saline intrusion sites and landslides in Long An province on August 13-14, 2019.

Following the activities signed in the memorandum of science and technology cooperation on November 21, 2017 between the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the Korean delegation with 10 members from universities and research institutes, science and technology organizations and education organizations ... together with representatives of VKIST established a mission to meet with the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research (SIWRR) and conduct field surveys at saline intrusion sites and landslides in Long An province on August 13-14, 2019

In the afternoon of August 13, 2019, at the SIWRR, the mission met with leaders and staffs of the Institute and collected the most general knowledge about natural geography of the Mekong Delta as well as the development of policies, mechanisms, policies, plans, long-term and annual plans on science and technology in the field of irrigation, hydropower and environment in the southern provinces. Both sides expect future cooperation to solve natural disaster-related problems and improve issues in the lives of people that both Vietnamese and Korean are facing.

On August 14, 2019, the delegation joined with officials of Long An Provincial Department of Science and Technology and officials of Can Giuoc district, Tan Tap commune officials to visit the water treatment plant of Bang Tam water and environment Joint Stock Company in Phu Thanh hamlet, Long Phung commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An province. Here, the delegation learned about the current situation of water supply in the region, understood the difficulties of the people for the lack of drinking water.

The delegation then visited some landslides at the river side in Tan Tap area, discuss with local people and officials to learn about the annual level of landslides on both sides of the river and options of local authority for handling problem.

The delegation also came and worked with teachers in Tan Tap primary school. Here, knowing the difficulties due to lack of drinking water due to saline groundwater and surface water, the delegation proposed to donate Tan Tap primary school a system to treat saline water to drinking water for lifting high quality service for students and teachers of the school, is also a small symbol for the friendship between the two countries Vietnam - Korea.

The delegation ended the mission in the Mekong Delta in the afternoon of the same day with expectations of cooperation and development of many related projects here.
