Overview of the event

At the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Phuong Thien Thuong briefly presented the implementation process and research results of the project. Hy thiem is a medicinal herb that has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine to treat bone and joint diseases, including rheumatism, osteoarthritis, etc. On the Vietnamese and international markets, there are many products that use Hy thiem as the main ingredient. Therefore, it is very important to control the quality of medicinal herbs and products containing Hy thiem to ensure their effectiveness. The pharmacopoeias of China and Hong Kong regulate the quality control of Hy thiem with qualitative and quantitative criteria, the main active ingredient being kirenol, an active ingredient in the diterpenoid group of medicinal herbs. However, according to the research team, there are many samples of hydrangea grown in Vietnam that do not contain kirenol, so the above Pharmacopoeias cannot be applied to evaluate the quality of Vietnamese medicinal herbs and products.

Therefore, the project on “"Identifying anti-inflammatory active ingredients in Hy thiem to improve the extraction efficiency and upgrade the standards of products containing Hy thiem” is highly essential and practical in controlling the quality of Hy Thiem medicinal herbs, improving the production efficiency of products, and improving the treatment efficiency of products from Hy Thiem medicinal herbs.

Assoc.Prof. Phuong Thien Thuong – the project’s PI presented at the meeting

Assoc. Prof. Phuong Thien Thuong reported the main results of the project as follows: (1) Identified the active ingredients of Vietnamese herbal medicine as darutoside, kirenol, hythiemoside A and hythiemoside B; in which, the compound darutoside is considered to be typical of Vietnamese Hy thiem; (2) Developed a highly standardized extraction process of Hy thiem according to the content of darutoside active ingredients; (3) Established basic standards for medicinal herbs; (4) Regarding new contributions: the project has developed a national standard substance, namely darutoside, and a method for quantifying compounds for quality control of medicinal herbs and products from Hy thiem. The research team proposes to include the active compound namely darutoside and the criteria for qualitative and quantitative determination of this active compound in the quality control of Vietnamese medicinal herbs and consider including the criteria in Hy thiem monograph in the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia so that the Authorities have tools to control the quality of medicinal herbs and products from Hy thiem on the market. From the results obtained, the Plant Medicinal Products No. 28 has agreed to receive the research results to develop Osviko products used for the prevention and treatment of bone and joint diseases, such as rheumatism, osteoarthritis, etc., which are common diseases of Vietnamese people.
